Overcoming Adversity: Celebrating Sofia Enlow, TRCF’s 2026 Stellar Scholar

We are thrilled to announce Sofia Enlow as The Ruth Cheatham Foundation’s 2026 Stellar Scholar! Sofia’s journey is one of courage, resilience, and determination, and she is a true inspiration.

Sofia is in her freshman year of undergraduate education and is a first-time TRCF Scholar. After being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia following her junior year of high school, she completed her senior year fully online before transitioning into in-person college life. She is currently in active treatment, which will continue through the end of 2026, and is managing college life two hours away from her family.

While there are numerous resources available for pediatric cancer patients, many young adults with cancer face a sudden loss of support as they transition into adulthood. Sofia experienced this barrier firsthand:

“When I turned 18 this past September, pretty much all of the resources and support that I had through other programs were no longer available to me.”

Through TRCF, she discovered not only financial assistance but also a community that truly understands the challenges young adult cancer survivors face. The support she found has helped her stay on track with her education while navigating treatment and life away from home.

During her first semester, Sofia faced five emergency room visits, two of which led to multi-day hospital stays. On top of that, the side effects from her treatment and frequent travel home made completing coursework feel impossible at times. Despite these challenges, Sofia persevered with the encouragement, tutoring, and support that TRCF provided. She ultimately earned all A’s and A+’s, finishing the semester with a 4.0 GPA and proving to herself that she was capable despite everything she faced.

“Receiving the scholarship made me feel like someone thought I could do this, despite having every single aspect stacked against me.”

Looking ahead, Sofia plans to use her education to make a difference, whether through nonprofit work or as a juvenile defense attorney. Her story is a powerful example of what young cancer survivors can achieve when they have the support they need. She embodies the mission of TRCF, which is to provide encouragement, resources, and a community for scholars navigating cancer and life beyond treatment.

On behalf of everyone at TRCF: Congratulations, Sofia!

We’re so proud of everything that you managed to accomplish and the resilience you’ve shown throughout your journey. We look forward to seeing what lies ahead for you as you continue to face adversity head-on. Keep up the stellar work!
