DALLAS, TX - Nine extraordinary students have been selected as recipients of The Ruth Cheatham Foundation (TRCF) Scholarship Award; given to students who have had or are currently battling cancer.

“Central to our work at the foundation, is a dedication to provide aid specifically directed to the unique educational needs of this underserved group,” said Lindsay Whittemore, TRCF President and Co-Founder.  “All of our recipients demonstrated how driven and resilient they are, showing great potential in leading future generations and positively shaping this world we live in.”

Cancer is both emotionally and financially draining.  TRCF is dedicated to providing much needed support, education, and hope to young adults in all stages of the cancer process. TRCF Scholarships are being awarded at a time when the total patient costs for cancer average $6,000-$10,000 out of pocket annually.  Compound that with the increasing costs of tuition (Nearly $10,000 at public universities and almost $35,000 at private colleges) and the prospect of continuing an education after a cancer diagnosis can seem unattainable. Supporting these students continued academic success and sharing their stories, underscores the foundation’s efforts across all of our programs.

TRCF invites you to meet and celebrate our 2018 scholarship recipients at their annual gala on May 11th at The Omni Hotel in Dallas.   To learn more or purchase tickets please visit: http://www.ruthcheathamfoundation.org/gala/

“When we were first introduced to Annette, we were amazed at everything that she and the Carson Leslie Foundation had accomplished” Lindsay Whittemore, President and Co-Founder. “Annette’s drive, passion, and resume is unlike no other.  Her work not only encompasses supporting local teens impacted by cancer, but has gone as far as Washington D.C. and the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus.  We are fortunate enough to have not only found a partner for our work, but more importantly, we found a great mentor”.

“I am honored and humbled to be the first selected to receive The Ruth Cheatham Award.  We, at the Carson Leslie Foundation, know exactly what it means and do not take lightly the responsibility you have when your foundation bears the name of someone you wish to honor” Annette Leslie. “We are encouraged by the fact our organizations share the same mission and thrilled to be associated with the prestigious name of Ruth Cheatham”.

The Carson Leslie Foundation was established in 2010 to honor the memory of their son, Carson Leslie. Carson, himself a courageous, driven, and accomplished teenage boy battled medulloblastoma, the most prevalent brain cancer in children.  As a testament to Carson’s character and tenacity, he authored a book in hopes of being a voice for children not able to tell their story.

Dallas, TX - The Ruth Cheatham Foundation (TRCF), a nonprofit focused on supporting adolescent youth through all phases of cancer treatment, is pleased to announce its first major fundraiser and launch party. The Fundraiser will be held in Dallas, TX at the Blue Mesa Grill on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 7 PM.

“I don't think any of us expected the response we have seen out of the gate. We are thrilled with amount of support we have garnered from local businesses.  My concern now, is to ensure the demand for the event does not outpace the capacity of our venue” said Douglas Whittemore, Treasurer and Co-Founder. “It’s a good problem to have, we look forward to meeting all those that are interested in supporting us and our mission.

As part of the event, TRCF plans on offering a limited number of VIP packages for purchase; remaining seating will be free on a first-come first-served basis.  The event will offer a silent auction and raffle provided by its corporate partners.

“One of our first initiatives will be to bolster resources and technology at Children’s Medical Center library” said Angie Cheatham, Secretary and Board Member. “We are looking to fill the need for e-reader devices at Children’s Medical Center, allowing patients to utilize ebooks and additional educational technology throughout their treatment.  This is one of many ways we are able to enhance the treatment process while in the hospital”.

“None of this would be possible without our corporate partners. Dallas has some of the most community minded businesses out there” said Caren Van-Pelt, Board Member.  “We have truly been humbled and are overwhelmed by the support we have seen”
