More Scholars, More Dreams, More Futures Ahead
A cancer diagnosis can change a young person's life in ways they never expected. For a young adult, treatment can mean putting school on hold, navigating unexpected financial challenges, or trying to find a new sense of normal while watching their peers move forward. But a cancer diagnosis should never determine what a young person is capable of becoming.
At The Ruth Cheatham Foundation, we believe surviving cancer should be the beginning of what’s possible, not the end of a young person’s plans. That belief is at the heart of everything we do, and this year, we are proud to see our community reach more young people than ever before.
Last year, TRCF supported 345 young cancer survivors pursuing higher education. This year, that number has grown to 450 TRCF Scholars.
450 Scholars, More Bright Futures
Growing from 345 to 450 scholars means 105 more young cancer survivors are continuing their education with a community behind them. While 450 is an exciting milestone, the number only tells part of the story. Behind it are 450 individual students, each with their own experiences, ambitions, and vision for what comes next.
Our scholars are earning degrees, developing new skills, preparing for careers, and working toward the lives they envisioned for themselves. For some, that means returning to school after treatment interrupted their education. For others, it means starting college while navigating the lasting effects of cancer and its treatment. Wherever they are in their journey, TRCF is here to help them keep moving forward.
It Starts with Scholarships
Financial aid is at the heart of TRCF’s mission. We know that for young cancer survivors, the cost of higher education can be especially challenging when combined with the financial impact and disruption of treatment. A scholarship can help ease that burden and give students more room to focus on their education and the goals they are working toward.
Through our scholarship program, TRCF provides financial support to young cancer survivors attending accredited colleges, universities, and trade schools. But the impact extends beyond helping cover the cost of school. It gives a student the opportunity to stay enrolled, pursue a degree, and continue building toward a career and life that cancer does not define.
Helping Scholars Stay on Track
Starting or returning to school is an accomplishment in itself, but staying on track can bring a new set of challenges. Treatment can interrupt a student's education at any point, and the transition back to the classroom may come with academic hurdles that aren't always easy to overcome alone.
That's why TRCF also provides tutoring to scholars who need additional academic support. Last year, our scholars received more than 300 hours of tutoring, helping students navigate challenging coursework and stay focused on their goals. More importantly, having someone in their corner can give a student the confidence to keep going when the road gets difficult.
Fueling the Future
Our commitment to our scholars extends beyond helping them earn their degree. We want them to feel prepared not only to complete their education, but to take the next step with confidence.
This year, our Educational Support Box program is themed “Fuel Your Future”, with a focus on career readiness. Each box provides practical resources to help scholars prepare for what comes next, including resume preparation, interview tips, LinkedIn guidance, and professional development tools.
For a young adult preparing for a first interview, applying for a professional position, or figuring out how to turn their education into a career, having the right tools can make a meaningful difference. These resources give scholars something tangible to take with them as they transition from the classroom into the workforce. It's one more way we're helping them look ahead and recognize the possibilities waiting for them beyond cancer.
